What was one consequence of the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898? Thousands of Black residents were forced to leave the city. Black people started independent local governments. The Red Shirts formed to help keep local communities safe. The Populist Party decided to form a coalition with Republicans.
They drove out opposing black and white political leaders from the city, destroyed black citizens' property and enterprises built up since the Civil War, including the city's only black newspaper, and killed between 60 and 300 individuals.
