In his cell, Friar Lawrence speaks with Paris about the latter’s impending marriage to Juliet. Paris says that Juliet’s grief about Tybalt’s death has made her unbalanced, and that Capulet, in his wisdom, has determined they should marry soon so that Juliet can stop crying and put an end to her period of mourning. The friar remarks to himself that he wishes he were unaware of the reason that Paris’s marriage to Juliet should be delayed.
Paris goes to Friar Laurence to discuss and arrange his upcoming wedding to Juliet. When Juliet arrives at the Friar's room, Paris goes to her immediately and talks excitedly about their wedding, going as far as to address her as "wife" and "love." While Juliet is seemingly polite, Paris is ignorant of her true feelings. When Paris asks Juliet if she will confess her love for him to Friar Laurence, Juliet replies, "I will confess to you that I love him." In saying this, she subtly rejects Paris, but he does not understand that this is a rejection. The audience is aware that the "him" that Juliet is talking about is Romeo. When Paris tells Juliet that her face is his, she shoots back, "It may be so, for it is not mine own." Paris is unaware, but the audience knows that Juliet is not only rejecting any claim that Paris has over her, but she is also implying that she already belongs to Romeo.
