Rose and Kylie have a total of 96 stamps. If Rose has 48 more stamps than Kyle, what is the ratio of Kyles stamps to Roses stamps? Please explain. My answer is 1:2

The ratio would be 1:2 because the starting ratio is kyle:rose which is 96:48 and that simplifies to 1:2, so you are correct.

That is not the correct answer because that would mean Kylie has 96. But that is not what the question is saying.  It is saying that there are 96 stamps in total.
So

x would represent the amount of stamps kylie has 
and x + 48 would represent the amount of stamps Rose has
so then
2x + 48 = 96
2x = 48
x = 24
x+ 48 = 72
so the ration is 24:72
or 1:3 not 1:2
