Answer: The problem is not with the firefighters but with their training and education.

Explanation: Fire extinguishment and fire investigation are two different disciplines requiring two different skill sets and two differnt mind sets. Firefighters are successful in extingushing fires all the time but fire investigators sometimes have to admit that they have failed to figure out the cause of the fire.

Fire is an exotherimic chemical reaction involving the release of heat and light. Understanding fire requires an understasnding of chemistry and physics. Many firefighters have no education beyond high school in chemistry and physics. Without such education, nobody is going to be able to understand fire.

In the Willingham case, neither investigator (Vasquez or Fogg) had any scientific training and relied on "old fireman's tales," myths about the behavior of fire, to reach their erroneous conclusions. Foor a deep dive into the Willingham case, look up the Arson Review Committee report.
