I’m not sure that Lincoln’s assassination really did put the future of the nation in question, though the extent of the plot, which was to kill not only President Lincoln but also Secretary of State Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson. The plot only injured Seward and VP Johnson was unhurt. Thus, though the nation went into a long period of grieving, government retained its functions. Even if all three had been killed, I believe there were enough intelligent and truly patriotic men around to find a way to keep the nation from floundering, even though the Civil War wasn’t quite over.
