On April 26, 1986, during a low-power test at the Chernobyl nuclear power facility in Ukraine got out of control, resulting in an explosion and fire that destroyed the nuclear plant and sent massive amounts of radioactivity into the atmosphere.
The death toll from immediate blast injuries and acute radiation sickness is estimated to be around 30 persons. The exclusion zone which extends for 30 kilometers around the plant, is practically abandoned.
