The mother has been through a lot in her life that hasnt been a "crystal staircase". Even though it's been hard, the mother continues moving forward just like moving up a staircase. This makes a great example for why the mom gives her son good advice.

I believe the advice the mother gives her son in the poem is inspiring. Their life is not easy, and he may often think of giving up. However, he must keep in mind that others, including his own mother, fought long and hard to get him where he is now. To give up would be to throw their efforts away.
I have received similar advice in life from my parents. They were both extremely poor growing up and had to fight to accomplish their goals in life. They would tell me, "Remember where you come from," in the sense that I should remember I come from a family of hard-working people.
