In both the American Revolution and the ensuing War for Independence, women played crucial roles. These women are regarded as Founding Mothers by historian Cokie Roberts. Politics was influenced by women like Mercy Otis Warren and Abigail Adams, the wife of Massachusetts Congressional Delegate John Adams. Abigail Adams famously and frequently wrote letters to her husband while he was in Philadelphia, urging him to "remember the women" in the new form of government or else they would start their own revolution. As politically astute as Adams, Warren was also a prolific writer and a dramatist in addition to capturing her observations of the events churning around Boston. She wrote in December 1774, four months before the conflict started at Lexington and Concord, expressing her fervent devotion to the cause of the patriotism, “America stands armed with resolution and virtue, but she still recoils at the idea of drawing the sword against the nation from whence she derived her origin”. In 1805 she published History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution.
