When people attend to certain stimuli available in the environment while filtering out others this is called Selective attention.

It means focusing or paying attention on selected aspects of the environment by blocking out of others. In other words we can say it is a process which allows an individual to select and focus on particular input for any further processing while simultaneously suppressing irrelevant information.

For example- In public place you are talking with any of your friend or family member, then all the other disturbing or distracting noises/sounds will be left unheard to you as you will be paying attention to your particular speaker's words who will be then the center of focus for you.
