An American sociologist and political scientist by the name of Seymour Martin Lipset. Political sociology, trade union organisation, social stratification, public opinion, and the sociology of intellectual life were the main areas of his research. He also wrote a lot about the prerequisites for democracy from a comparative standpoint. Early on, Lipset identified as a socialist, but he later shifted to the right and was sometimes referred to as a neoconservative.
He was referred to as "the leading theorist of democracy and American exceptionalism" by The Guardian, "a preeminent sociologist, political scientist, and incisive theorist of American uniqueness" by The New York Times, and "one of the most influential social scientists of the past half century" by the Washington Post at the time of his passing in 2006.
