Thomas Gainsborough RAFRSA (14 May 1727 (Baptism) – 2 August 1788) was a British portrait painter, landscape painter, draftsman, and printer. Together with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the late 18th century.
He paints quickly, and his mature work features a bright palette and simple strokes. Gainsborough was a prolific portrait painter, but he got more satisfaction from his landscape. He is believed to be the founder of the 18th Century British Landscape School (along with Richard Wilson). Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, the youngest son of John Gainsborough, a weaver and wool maker, and his wife Mary, sister of the Reverend Humphrey Burroughs.
