The mid-1980s saw a recovery in public trust before it began to decline once more in the mid-1990s. However, as the economy expanded in the late 1990s, so did public confidence. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, public trust peaked for three decades, but it then quickly fell. Since 2007, the shares stating that one can always or largely trust the government have decreased.
