Civil war had two different purposes which differ for the poor and for the rich.

The poor had to fight for the food, water and all the daily needs of one's life. The state of poverty through which they were going was getting worst by the time. All of the people who had been in the civil war were facing acute shortage of the food and had a really tough life to go through. The rich people waged the poor for the fight not thinking about the poor person's family.

And to the rich it was nothing but just a simple way to give money and make poor fight for them. The rich would enslave the poor for there own benefits.
