Throughout its civilization, Mesopotamia encountered numerous issues. The lack of food in the highlands was one of them. There was not enough land to meet everyone's food demands because of the expanding population. Additionally, the land in the plains wasn't always productive.
To feed the expanding population, they would establish farms in larger, more resourceful areas. They would eventually widen the plains to produce enough food to sustain them for a considerable amount of time and all winter.
Mesopotamians constructed sturdy walls using bricks that had been baked in the sun in order to keep their population safe and under check. That protected against unexpected attacks. To make it impossible for people to cross, they also constructed moats surrounding the walls.
