Governments allow their citizens to govern themselves.
Populism, political programs or movements that claim to defend or represent the common man, usually as opposed to real or perceived elites or establishments. Populism usually combines elements of the left and right to oppose major business and economic interests, but is also often hostile to the mainstream liberal, socialist, and labor parties.
The term populism can refer to both democratic and authoritarian movements. Populism is usually critical of political representation and anything that mediates the relationship between people and their leaders and governments. Most democratic forms of populism seek to protect the interests of ordinary citizens and maximize their power through reform rather than revolution. In the United States, the term was applied to the programs of the populist movement that gave rise to the Populist or People’s Party in 1892. Many of the party’s demands were later adopted as legislation or constitutional amendments (e.g. progressive taxation) .
Therefore populist demands for direct democracy through popular initiative and referendums are also becoming a reality in some US states.
