In the United States, the term was applied to the programs of the populist movement that gave rise to the Populist or People’s Party in 1892. Many of the party’s demands were later adopted as legislation or constitutional amendments (e.g. progressive taxation) .
Therefore populist demands for direct democracy through popular initiative and referendums are also becoming a reality in some US states.
