The cost of having offenders incarcerated versus being supervised in the community has been shown to be relatively more expensive.
What is the cost of incarcerating offenders instead of supervising them?
Statistics from the United States government, specifically the arm that represents the courts, has shown that when an offender is detained, they cost the government about eight times more than if the offender is supervised in the community.
This is due to the costs incurred by the government when an offender is incarcerated. They include feeding the offender, providing them with services that are befitting of a human being, and maintaining prisons by paying utilities.
There is also the uniforms that the offender wears and the salaries of prison staff. If the offender is instead supervised in the community, these costs will reduce as the offender can get a job and defray some of the expenses.
On a cost basis therefore, it is cheaper to supervise an offender in the community, instead of incarcerating them.
