Hobbes was of the opinion that individuals needed to be shielded from their own baser natures by means of a social compact. On the other hand, Locke was of the opinion that the protection of people's inherent rights required the establishment of a social compact.

Locke was of the opinion that individuals should be able to rebel against the government if it did not defend their rights.

Generally, Although they shared a commitment to natural law and a focus on social contracts, Locke and Hobbes came from quite different academic backgrounds. Originally from Malmesbury, England, Hobbes became a prominent figure in the history of Western philosophy.

In conclusion, Hobbes was of the opinion that a social compact was required in order to shield individuals from the worst aspects of their nature.

On the other hand, Locke was of the opinion that a social compact was essential in order to safeguard the inherent rights of individuals.
