Primary succession takes longer to reach the climax community than secondary succession.

What is succession?

In ecology, succession refers to the gradual changes to the community of plants and animals in an ecosystem over a period of time.

Succession can be primary or secondary.

Primary succession occurs when an area that has never held any form of life before gets colonized by living organisms. These organisms are referred to as pioneer species. From there, the community keeps changing over time until a stable community is reached.

Secondary succession occurs when an area that has a community of organisms before gets disturbed. From there, the community tries to readjust and the normal succession continues.

Thus, it takes a longer time for primary succession to get to the climax community because everything starts from the beginning. Secondary succession, on the other hand, already has the foundation to build on.
