Indium (In) reacts with HCl to form a diamagnetic solid with the formula InCl₂. In is paramagnetic in nature while HCl is diamagnetic in nature. InCl₂ is diamagnetic in nature due to the absence of unpaired electron.
What is diamagnetic?
Diamagnetic materials are those material which are repelled by the magnetic field; an magnetic field which is applied across the diamagnetic material which creates an induced magnetic field in it in the opposite to the direction of applied magnetic field, causing a repulsive force.
What is Paramagnetic?
Paramagnetic materials are those material which are attracted by the magnetic field; an magnetic field which is applied across the diamagnetic material which creates an induced magnetic field in it in the direction of applied magnetic field, causing a attractive force.
Since, indium has incomplete octet, there are one electron unpaired electron in its outermost shell. So, it is Paramagnetic in nature. On the other hand, HCl make bond and pair up all the unpaired electron. Therefore, it is diamagnetic in nature.
After In bonded with two atoms of Cl the unpaired electron of In become paired. Since, there is no unpaired electron. InCl₂ is diamagnetic in nature.
Thus, we concluded that InCl₂ is diamagnetic in nature due to the absence of unpaired electron.
