Van der Waals intermolecular force is primarily responsible for different types of polyethylene.

  • Large number of polymer applications in different fields depend on their unique mechanical properties like tensile strength, elasticity, etc. These mechanical properties are governed by intermolecular forces like van der Waals forces present in the polymer.
  • Polyethylene and its types belong to thermoplastic polymers. These are the linear or slightly branched long chain molecules capable of repeatedly softening on heating and hardening on cooling.
  • Thermoplastic polymers possess intermolecular forces of attraction intermediate between elastomers (rubber like solids) which has weakest intermolecular forces and fibres (thread forming solids) which has strong intermolecular forces.

Thus we can conclude that van der waals force or dispersion force is primarily responsible for different types of polyethylene.
