At ovulation, a secondary oocyte is released from an ovary and carried by a uterine tube towards the uterus.

Ovulation can be described as a process in which the mature egg or secondary oocyte is released from the ovary of a female. The process of ovulation occurs approximately 14 days prior to menstruation for a female experiencing a normal cycle.

After the process of ovulation has occurred, the duration of the luteal phase occurs during which the egg is available for a sperm cell to fertilize it. The uterine lining thickens in order for the egg to stay in it.

In case fertilization of the egg does not occur, then the uterine lining, as well as the egg, is broken down and the process is referred to as menstruation.
