Cryotherapy and heat therapy are the two forms through which thermotherapy is given.

Cryotherapy is given in order to decrease inflammation, pain, and other symptoms such as muscle spasms. For cryotherapy, one can use ice packs, ice water immersion, or simple massage with ice.

Providing heat therapy helps to increase the rate of blood flow to an injured site, stiffness and soreness of the muscles are also reduced through heat therapy. Various means through which heat therapy can be given include heating pads, using hot water pads etc.
