A second-order change is a deviation from your previous behavior that is important or essential. Usually, the procedure is irreversible. Once you start, it's difficult to go back to how you were previously doing things.
Second-order change is comparable to changing gears when operating a vehicle, to return to the earlier analogy. We can only reach a certain spectrum of velocities and RPMs when we add gas while operating in a specific gear. We can reach new speeds after changing gears that were either unavailable to us before or harmful to the transmission.
