The solution with a higher concentration of solute is called a hypertonic solution. The solution with a lower concentration of solutes is called a hypotonic solution.
The solutes always diffuse from a region of higher concentration to a lower concentration by a process called osmosis.
If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution the cell will shrink due to the diffusion of molecules from the cytoplasm to the external environment. If the cell is placed in the hypotonic medium the cell will swell due to the passage of molecules from the external environment to the cytoplasm.
