The primary focus of a person's vision is their central vision. It is used for driving, reading, and seeing faces or photos. Shapes, colours, and details can all be seen clearly and sharply with good centre vision.
Central vision is provided by a region of the retina, which is the lining of the rear of the eye, called the macula. When the macula is damaged, side (peripheral) vision is typically significantly more severely lost than when the remainder of the retina is damaged.
There are two types of central vision loss: abrupt and progressive. One or more dark or fuzzy dots appear in the person's field of vision in place of the features they were previously perceiving. Over time, these blemishes could expand or develop more.
