During the Early Middle Ages, the interlace design was seen in decorative objects in northern Europe and in illuminated manuscripts by Christian monks.
The interlace design shows a series of intricated figures, geometric patterns, loops, knots commonly known as "plaits". They were used to fill spaces in a decorative way.
It can be also seen in late Roman Art, particularly in mosaics, and in Coptic manuscripts and textiles. Later, it became very used in Ireland and Britain.
Christian monks adopted it for illuminated manuscripts. They used the interlace design for lettering and borders of the folios.
