We have been thinking about two claims that are possible explanations for how the channel on Mars
was formed. We have considered evidence from images, as well as from the Flowing Water Model
and the Flowing Lava Model. As you answer the questions below, refer to the channel on Mars
1.
Select the claim you think is best supported by the evidence you have seen so far. (check one)
 Claim 1: Flowing water formed the channel on Mars.
 Claim 2: Flowing lava formed the channel on Mars.
2.
Why do you think the claim you selected is best supported by the evidence?

Respuesta :

The claim that I think is best supported by the evidence seen thus far is suggestive of the fact that Claim 1 which indicates that Flowing water formed the channel on Mars is a better or stronger claim.

Why do you think the claim you selected is best supported by the evidence?

The claim selected above is suggestive of the fact that lava flowed down the steep gradient leading to the formation of a Triangular landform at the base.

The evidence to support this claim was also found by Curiosity Rover which detected new rock formation near the triangle shaped landform.

While it is true that lava and water bodies impact rock formation differently, this phenomena is exactly what has helped to determine what type of event created the rock identified by Curiosity rover near the Triangle shaped landform. [See the attached image]

Cementation and Rock formation

The type of rock identified by Curiosity suggests that it is of the sort that is formed by Cementation. See attached image.

Hence, it is more correct to select claim 1 which indicates that flowing water formed the channel on Mars.
