The number of beaver colonies in Yellowstone increased after the reintroduction of wolves.
In the year 1995 and 1999, we had only one beaver colony that was counted. From the year 2000, the colony count of these beavers increased and by the year 2010, the count reached 12 colonies.
It was believed that if there are no wolves, there are going to be no beavers. When the wolves were decreased, it resulted in the far-reaching changes in the Yellowstone ecosystem. There were more elks and fewer willows. When there were no willows to slow stream flow, creeks flowed faster and faster.
The beavers prefer slow-moving waters, so even they disappeared the minute the willows disappeared.
