While particularist protectionism might be a natural response to cultural pressure - humans tend to fall back on defensive ethnocentrism, however it is not sustainable.
Cultural pressure refers to a cultural group's ability to affect the behavior of its members without the use of formal authority or power. Cultural groupings may pressure you to do things that are not in your best interests or that contradict what you truly believe or feel. However, it could be a beneficial thing because it encourages its members to behave well, try new things, and increase their standards of living.
Ethnocentrism is the tendency to view the world predominantly through the lens of one's own culture. People who practice defensive ethnocentrism are no longer utterly unaware of other cultures.
