Water scarcity refers to a region with not enough water to sustain its population. Population growth is a very serious example of scarcity. The population of MENA is growing so rapidly, that the available water isn’t enough. According to the text, Rapid population growth has exaggerated the water scarcity MENA already faces. “MENA’s population is expected to nearly double in the next 50 years lowering the average per capita amount of renewable fresh water to around 1,100 cubic meters a year.” (Para 7, 4-5) This shows that all the water problems will most likely lead to conflict, poverty, and further famine than already present.
With the population of MENA continuing to grow at an accelerating rate, the amount of water that is available is simply not sufficient to support certain areas, resulting in a catastrophe. I think that one solution to this problem is the importation of water. Importing water would help stabilize the discord happening all over MENA because of water. As a result, the government would have more time to address problems.
Misuse of water is when countries misuse their water. A very serious example of misuse of water is wealthy countries taking more than their fair share. As the author points out, the average amount of water in countries such as Turkey, Iraq, and Syria is below 250 cubic meters per person per year. “The average amount of fresh water available in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen is already below 250 cubic meters per person per year.” (Para 6, 4-6) This shows that the countries that don’t face as severe poverty such as Israel and Saudi Arabia (the developed parts) have a lot of access to water. Therefore, it is no longer a scarcity. Unequal water distribution will inevitably lead to conflict and even more poverty.
The population of all the countries that aren't as privileged as Israel and Saudi Arabia will greatly decrease if this problem isn't addressed. Also, without enough water to irrigate their crops, all the crops will wither and die. A solution to this problem might be to set strict mandates on water use, such as no swimming pools, etc. These would help more evenly distribute water to less developed countries.
