The different factors that can affect an ecosystem can be divided into two categories: abiotic and biotic.

The abiotic factors are those that do not have life within them. These are sunlight, air, soil, temperature, gases, etc. All these factors have a major contribution upon deciding the ecosystem of an area. For example, if a region has less oxygen and more greenhouse gases in its environment, the region is not suitable for lives to survive there.

The biotic factors are: plants, microorganisms, animals and humans. Interactions between these organisms and their interaction with the abiotic components together plays a major role in shaping the ecosystem.
