The contemporary worldwide racism, and the idea of race, are historically rooted in the practice of colonialism.

Colonialism is the act of one population or power controlling another people or region, frequently by forming alliances and usually with the intention of gaining economic domination. Colonizers may impose their economic system, language, religion, race and other cultural practises during the colonization process.

The territory is ruled by foreign administrators who want to take advantage of the people and resources in the colonised area in order to further their own goals. It is related to imperialism but different from it. Although colonialism has persisted since antiquity, the term is most closely linked with the European colonial era, which began in the 15th century with the establishment of some European powers' colonial empires.
