According to the  Cannon-Bard theory the thalamus, or lower part of the brain, controls your emotional experience. At the same time, the higher part of the brain, also known as the cortex, regulates emotional expression. It is thought that these two parts of the brain react at the same time. According to the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion, stimulating events cause feelings and physical reactions to occur at the same time. For example, seeing a snake may cause both fear (an emotional response) and a racing heartbeat (a physical reaction).
