Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is widely known as the "Father of Mexican Independence". He was born in rural Guanajuato, where his father ran a farm. He was a brilliant student of theology and philosophy at the Bishop's College of St. Nicholas in what is now Morelia.

"Father of Mexican Independence" Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla launched the Mexican Rebellion with "The Cry of Dolores" and his populist forces were on the verge of conquering the Mexican capital. He was defeated at Calderon in January 1811 and fled north but was captured and executed.
