The Roosevelt corollary to the Monroe doctrine developed idea that the United States had the authority to operate as the policeman of the western hemisphere and meddle in the domestic affairs of latin American countries.

A stance on international affairs of the United States known as the Monroe Doctrine challenged European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere. It maintained that any foreign power's interference in the political affairs of the Americas was potentially hostile toward the United States. Throughout much of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the idea served as the cornerstone of American foreign policy.

Nearly all of Spain's former colonies in the Americas had either attained independence or were on the verge of doing so at the time. Monroe Doctrine said that the Old and New Worlds were to maintain independent spheres of influence, and that any future attempts by European powers to rule or sway sovereign states in the area would be seen as a threat to American security.
