Categorical grants as federal aid must be assigned to get more American women to breastfeed their infants.
In 1972, the federal government established the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Recipients of aid must be women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or children under the age of 5 whose family income falls below 185% of the federal poverty line.
WIC offers free dietary assistance, breastfeeding support, health education, and other programs to expectant mothers, new mothers, infants, and kids up to age five. WIC teaches mothers what to feed their developing children as well as themselves and their unborn or nursing babies.
