Like a true experiment, a quasi-experimental design aims to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between an independent and dependent variable. A quasi-experiment, unlike a true experiment, does not rely on random assignment. Subjects are instead assigned to groups based on non-random criteria.
As an example of a quasi-experimental study, imagine a hospital implementing a new order-entry system and wishing to investigate the impact of this intervention on the number of medication-related adverse events before and after the intervention.
Like experimental designs, quasi-experimental research designs test causal hypotheses. By definition, a quasi-experimental design lacks random assignment. In quasi-experimental designs, a comparison group is chosen that is as similar to the treatment group as possible in terms of baseline (pre-intervention) characteristics.
