Spread of cancer cells from their site of origin to sites distant in the body is called Metastasis.

Cancer cells spread from their original location to another part of the body. Cancer cells break away from the original (primary) tumor and travel through the blood or lymph system to form a new tumor in other organs or tissues of the body during metastasis. The secondary tumor is the same type of cancer as the primary tumor. If breast cancer spreads to the lung, for example, the cancer cells in the lung are breast cancer cells, not lung cancer cells. Many cancer deaths occur when cancer spreads from the original tumor to other tissues and organs. This is referred to as metastatic cancer.
