Research that a marketer collects from existing sources that relates to a current marketing effort is called Primary research.

Primary research is a methodology that researchers use to gather data directly as opposed to relying on data gathered from previously completed research. They "own" the data technically. Only when a specific issue necessitates in-depth analysis is primary research conducted.

There are two types of study:

  • both primary and secondary research

Businesses and organizations have two options for conducting primary research: either they can do it themselves or hire a third party to do it for them. Primary research has the major benefit of being "pinpointed"; it is conducted with a single focus on a single issue or problem and all efforts are made to find relevant solutions.
