Atticus calls Mayella ''ma'am'' and ''miss Mayella'',.According to Mayella, these words sound disrespectful.
Mayella's father used to treat her violently. He is an alcoholic and may have physically abused or possibly even raped his daughter. She does not live in a healthy environment and is probably in constant fear and this makes her insecure and neither does she know what kindness means.
Atticus calls Mayella ''ma'am', When she takes the witness stand, this makes her hostile and she threatens not to answer any questions if Atticus continues calling her that. she thinks that he is making fun of her. Although Atticus is just being polite, and this is explained by Judge Taylor, Mayella does not want to talk about her friends.
