The only legally available occupations for women were those that could be learned and practiced at home, like making hats and beer. Women were also not allowed to vote, and although they could inherit property from their husband or father, they were unable to purchase property for themselves.
It goes without saying that life for women during the Elizabethan era was difficult. Women were shaped into the obedient wife and mother by lawful religious fanaticism. Consecutive childbirths made them old before their time and led to very early deaths, making their lives dull and difficult.
