The effort to abolish slavery is known as abolitionist movement or abolitionism. Abolitionism was a historical movement in Western Europe and the Americas that aimed to halt the transatlantic slave trade and free those who were held in slavery.
One of the earliest proponents of abolition during the Enlightenment was James Oglethorpe, who worked to have slavery outlawed in the Province of Georgia for humanitarian reasons, fought to have it abolished in Parliament, and ultimately inspired his colleagues Granville Sharp and Hannah More to vigorously advance the cause. Sharp and More joined forces with William Wilberforce and other individuals to create the Clapham Sect soon after Oglethorpe passed away in 1785.
