The main message to the individual that Emerson expresses in self-reliance is that society negatively affects a person's growth.
It is not healthy for any society that the people conforms to all the norms prescribed. Through his essay, "Self Reliance", Emerson wanted to convey the message of how important it is for the people to avoid conformity.
It becomes essential that we appreciate our uniqueness and humane behavior. We are not machines which are given commands and they perform accordingly. We are beings full of emotions, our own conscience and we want to follow our own thing.
Emerson says that a person should have complete freedom to discover oneself and attain independence.
