The Federalist Party was the country's very first political party. It belonged to the political right. As a result, under Alexander Hamilton, it controlled the federal government from 1789 to 1801. It was overthrown by the Jeffersonian Republicans in 1800, lost New England's support, but briefly regained it by refusing to support the War of 1812. Following that, it continued to hold onto its stronghold while remaining a minority party. Then, in 1816, it was overthrown when its last presidential candidate lost. Remains continued for a while after that. Businessmen and conservatives who preferred Great Britain over France in international affairs, national government over state government, manufacturing, an army and navy, and banks were among the party's biggest supporters.
