In order to please the southern states and gain their ratification of the Constitution, the framers settled on the three-fifths clause; a clause that declared that each slave was counted as three-fifths a person in terms of representation. This clause was later overturned on the battlefields of the Civil War and the amendments to the Constitution that followed.
