VUR is a common condition in which urine backs up from the bladder into the kidneys. Reflux shows no symptoms so most people don't know they have it. VUR can cause permanent kidney damage if left untreated.
Since reflux doesn't cause symptoms is only diagnosed after a child develops one or more UTI's. There's two main types of UTI's: Bladder infections (cystitis) and kidney infections (pyelonephritis). If a child doesn't have reflux the infection will stay in the bladder. If the child does have reflux, the infected urine in the bladder could travel to the kidneys and cause a kidney infection.
