Bill hiked 3/10 mile on the lake trail.Then he hiked 5/10 mile on the rock trail to get back where he started how many miles did he hike?

These fractions already have the same denominator so only basic addition is necessary...

3/10+5/10

(3+5)/10

8/10  now factor out greatest common factor of numerator and denominator, in this case 2 so

(8/2)/(10/2)
