Mainly because of the culture and diversity. It is also not the most spoken language in the world.
Language doesn't only help us to communicate with other in an effective way. It is the main reason we are able to transmit our knowledge through generations. Imagine if language had never developed, we would be as primitive as millions of years ago. If someone learned to ligth a fire that knowledge would be lost when he died. As languages develop through time, they mold the way we think and relate eith other and the world. That means each language contains in it a lot of a culture's history and meaning. By preserving and learning different languages, the diversity is maintained as well as those knowledges, infinite ways of undestanding things become possible.
An example is time, our language teaches us time as a line formed by the past, the present and the future. When something happens it stays in the past, it is finished. Other languages seem time as a cycle, in which things only repeat themselves in different ways, therefore a very different way of living is experienced.
