The first oil distillation is attributed to the Arab sage of Persian origin Al-Razi in the ninth century, inventor of the alembic, with which he obtained kerosene and other distillates, for medical and military purposes.

Today, strategic oil reserves, especially in Saudi Arabia and Iran, are among the largest in the world and OPEC is dominated by Middle Eastern countries.
