Further Explanation:
The second chapter in "The Scarlet Letter" introduces to the scene where Hester stood before the crowd in the market place with her child. It was the puritan belief according to which the sin committed by any individual was subject to be recognized in public and was to be punished publicly. When Hester stood on the raised platform on the scaffold, she stood there as a sinner who had committed the crime of 'adultery'. She stood there with her infant girl child who was three months old. Hester was accused of sinning adultery in the absence of her husband. The exposure of the crime and the consequence of committed sins was a method during the Puritan period to set it as an example before the general public so that such an activity would come to an end. Also, Hester became a scapegoat on whom all the sins would easily be bundled upon. The women and the public who stood in the crowd accused her of her sin. They condemned her in their best possible way they can and they tried to remove all their sins from themselves by punishing her solely. Hester's punishment was a way of removal of the sins from the others too.
